Over the past two months, Lesotho has made bold strides in positioning itself as a compelling investment destination. Led by the Right Honourable Prime Minister, Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane, the country showcased its potential at two significant international platforms: TICAD 9 in Tokyo, Japan (August) and the Africa Down Under (ADU) Conference in Perth, Australia (September).
The Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC) proudly participated in both delegations, advancing our mandate to make Lesotho an investment destination of choice.
TICAD 9 – Tokyo, Japan
At TICAD, the Prime Minister delivered a powerful keynote address, highlighting Lesotho’s abundant water resources and hydropower potential. He positioned clean energy not just as a solution to electricity needs, but as an economic lifeline – a driver of job creation, youth entrepreneurship, and poverty alleviation.
Japan’s commitment of $5.5 billion in development loans, alongside initiatives to train 30,000 AI experts across Africa, resonates strongly with Lesotho’s development priorities. The opportunities to integrate renewable energy, digital transformation, and youth innovation are clear.
As an add-on, Lesotho also showcased its potential through a dedicated exhibition stall, engaging directly with investors and development partners to strengthen visibility.
Africa Down Under – Perth, Australia
The ADU Conference is the largest African-focused mining and investment gathering outside the continent, attracting investors, policymakers, and industry leaders. Lesotho used this platform to spotlight opportunities in diamonds, renewable energy, and data centres.
The delegation also toured Murray Engineering, a leading provider of mining and industrial solutions, to explore innovative approaches that could be adapted to Lesotho’s mining ecosystem.
LNDC’s Interim Chief Executive Officer, Adv. Molise Ramaili, reaffirmed LNDC’s mission during the conference:
“Our key responsibility is to make Lesotho an investment destination of choice, with diverse opportunities. Mining is one of them, but we are equally eager to attract investment in renewable energy and other sectors that can transform our economy.”
Looking Ahead
From Tokyo to Perth, Lesotho’s message has been clear: we are a nation rich in resources, committed to sustainable growth, and open for business. By aligning our strengths in clean energy, mining, and digital innovation, we aim to create opportunities that benefit not only investors but also the people of Lesotho.
LNDC will continue to champion this vision, working with global partners to unlock Lesotho’s full investment potential.
